Chrome Basic and Enhanced spell check handle text differently

When Chrome marks a word as misspelt, the underline tells you that a spelling check has raised a suggestion. It does not tell you which spell-check mode is active, whether the suggested correction is right, or whether the text has been sent to Google. The important difference is how entered words are handled.

What Basic and Enhanced spell check mean

On a computer, Chrome’s Basic spell check checks entered text without sending it to Google. Enhanced spell check sends entered text to Google so that Chrome can obtain suggestions. The relevant controls are found under Chrome’s Languages settings. The provider and visible options can vary by device. See the Chrome Help information about spell check for the supported setting details.

Fictional example: the same underline, different handling

Hypothetical example: An adult reader types “The room lable is clear” into a browser text box while writing a note. Chrome underlines “lable”. In Basic mode, the entered text is not sent to Google for this spell-check purpose. In Enhanced mode, the entered text is sent to Google to help produce suggestions. The reader may see a similar underline in both cases, so the mark alone cannot reveal the privacy mode.

After choosing a suggested correction, the visible result could be “The room label is clear” in either mode. That matching result does not prove that both modes handled the text in the same way; it only shows that a correction was offered and accepted.

What this does and does not establish

If the words are private, do not paste them into a test box merely to identify the mode, and do not change a setting on someone else’s behalf. Instead, read the current Languages setting and consider whether sending entered text to Google is acceptable for that use. Basic spell check’s stated behaviour does not guarantee that no other Chrome feature, extension, website, or device service can transmit information. It describes this spell-check path only.
