A Chrome focus highlight does not mean a link was bookmarked

When you move through a webpage with a keyboard or mouse, Chrome may briefly outline the item currently receiving focus. If that item is a link, the outline can look like a selection or saved marker. It is only visual feedback about where input is positioned; it does not show that the link was bookmarked, opened, or connected to a particular account.

What the highlight indicates

Focus tells you which page element is ready to receive the next input. A link can have focus even when you have not activated it. The highlight may move as you press the keyboard’s navigation keys or click another interactive item. Nothing is stored merely because the outline appears.

Chrome describes its accessibility option as showing a quick highlight on the object that has focus, whether focus arrived through the keyboard or the mouse. See the Chrome Help explanation of focus highlights.

A fictional before-and-after example

Hypothetical example: Riya tabs to an article link. A visible outline appears around “Read the timetable”. She does not activate it. After moving focus to “Contact”, the outline leaves the first link and appears around the second. Before the move, the first link was the focused object; after the move, the second was. The visible change does not indicate a bookmark, a page visit, or an account choice.

This comparison is useful because the outline follows the current position. A saved favourite would be a separate browser action with its own stored state, not simply a temporary border around whichever link is focused.

What the highlight cannot confirm

The outline alone cannot tell you whether a link has been activated, whether its destination has loaded, or whether any website account has recorded a choice. It does not explain the site’s implementation of focus. Treat it as a location cue while reading the page, and look for a separate visible result if you intentionally activate the link.
