Chrome on Android: change one site’s zoom without changing all sites

If an article is difficult to read on your Android phone, Chrome can enlarge that site without enlarging every other site. Distinguish a site-specific choice from Chrome’s default zoom before interpreting what changed.

Use zoom for the current site

In Chrome on Android, open the three-dot More menu, then Settings and Accessibility. Turn on Show zoom option in main menu. Return to the webpage, open More, choose Zoom, and move the slider to enlarge or shrink the page. The three dots and More name the same menu. This slider changes the current site's zoom, rather than every website's default size.

A site-specific adjustment is saved for that site. It does not edit the published webpage or the phone’s system text size. The official steps are described in Chrome Help’s Android accessibility guidance.

What happens when you open another site?

Hypothetical example: A reader enlarges the current news article because its paragraphs look small. Later, the reader opens a recipe website. The news site remains enlarged when revisited, while the recipe website keeps its own display size. The second site is not automatically enlarged simply because both pages were opened in the same Chrome app.

Site zoom versus default zoom

For a broader change, Chrome's Settings > Accessibility > Default zoom provides a separate slider. In the fictional comparison, the reader wanted only the news site enlarged. Changing the default would be a different task, so the recipe page staying unchanged is not evidence of failure.

Compare the same paragraph before and after the adjustment, then open the other site. Keep the page address with each observation: two similar-looking tabs are not necessarily pages from the same website. Neither comparison tells you that an author edited the underlying article.
